Frankie Wainman breaks records at Buxton

Frankie Wainman Jnr 515 was celebrating at Buxton on 2nd October following his Grand Final victory. All Final wins are, of course, celebrated by a driver and fans alike whether it is your first or your 283rd, as indeed it was for FWJ.

However, this was not just another win, it was a record breaking feat. Frankie now has the longest span of Grand Final Victories (First to Last) surpassing the previous record set by 53 John Lund.

The Silsden Superstar has been winning Finals for nearly 34 years, his first was back in 1987 just days after his 16th Birthday, and which is quite remarkable to think that anyone can be at the very top of their Sport for such a length of time, especially a full contact Sport.

Frankie’s Buxton success came just four days before his 50th Birthday and no-one would be surprised to see him winning more Finals and extending his Grand Final span.

As with any Record like this, the chance of it been beaten would seem to be highly unlikely, however there is a real threat to it.

Keep an eye on fellow Yorkshireman 34 Mal Brown. Mal is a regular racer an established red top and his first big race win came at the old Belle Vue in 1983 when FWJ was still at school. If Mal could claim a sixth Final it would see him set another new record. Make no mistake the Liversedge man is up for it, and if he could do it, he would also join (The 13) the elite list of over 50 year olds to win Finals.

Oh yes and don’t forget John Lund, he has impressed this season, not least making it to the World Final at the age of 67. Stock Car racing is unpredictable and he could cause a few more upsets.
