The Driver of the Year ran for the first time at White City in 1974 with Rod Falding (36) taking his first and only win, ahead of Stuart Smith (391).
Across the eleven stagings of the event the title was only contested at three tracks. White City staged seven out of the first eight with only Nelson staging the championship in this period. For the final three years in 1982 – 1984 the race was held at Rochdale with John Lund (53) taking the win in the last staging to date in 1984.
Only two drivers have successfully managed to win more than once with Frankie Wainman (212) on two wins and Stuart Smith (391) winning the title three times.
