This Sunday marks almost 70 years to the day since the first Stock Car event in the UK, with the Good Friday (16th April) event in 1954 creating a sport which is still thriving to this day – as will be proven this Sunday at Staffordshire’s Hednesford Hills Raceway!
The BriSCA F1 Stock Cars are making their 2024 debut at the venue: the so-called ‘Big League’ are the real kings of the ovals, and are the UK’s most spectacular, loudest and most supported short oval formula – with the drivers household names among the fans and race action bordering on unbelievable.
Stock Car racing has been a cornerstone at the venue, with plenty of memories which feel like just yesterday. Who can forget the spectacular end to the British Championship in 2023? Catherine Harris’ last bend attack on Ryan Harrison made for one of the moments of the season last year. Four World Finals have been held in the Hills too, with the gold roof being determined on the high-speed quarter miler in 1988, 1991, 1995 and 2001.
Speaking of going for gold, World Championship Qualifying Points are up for grabs on Sunday – with drivers trying to get as many points as possible to secure their position in a Semi Final, one of which will be held in July at the Hednesford venue.
Powered by 600bhp Chevrolet V8 engines and fitted with hefty steel bumpers, these leviathans shake the very foundations of the stadium with the roar and rumble of their powerplants and the clash of metal on metal, backed by the shouts and cheers of the crowd as they cheer on their favourite drivers.
Also racing for World Qualifying Points are the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, with the road to gold also continuing for this all-action formula.
The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars may be slightly smaller in size than their ‘Big League’ cousins, but they are just as exciting to watch. Get ready to hear the bumpers clang as these cars push each other out of the way for track position, with some of the big names of the class set to come from far and wide to compete on-track.
Racing also comes from the National Ministox, who always provide an incredible spectacle whenever they take to the track: these stars of the future don’t hold back when it comes to fast and furious action. They will be fresh from racing on Saturday night down at Northampton – with the Brafield venue also in action this weekend.
The classes racing on this packed Sunday afternoon all use the traditional Stock Car grading system, with the more experienced drivers starting at the back of the grid in every race and having to use their steel bumpers to push competitors aside to get to that chequered flag first!
If you’ve never been to the venue before, facilities include two covered grandstands, large grass banks, licensed bars and catering outlets – plus the option to bring your car inside the stadium grounds (additional fees apply for this, payable on the day).
